03.14.02Malicious code protectionITSP.10.171System and information integrity

Official Requirement

A. Implement malicious code protection mechanisms at system entry and exit points to detect and eradicate malicious code. B. Update malicious code protection mechanisms as new releases are available in accordance with configuration management policies and procedures. C. Configure malicious code protection mechanisms to: 1. perform scans of the system [assignment: organization-defined frequency] and real-time scans of files from external sources at endpoints or system entry and exit points as the files are downloaded, opened, or executed 2. block or quarantine malicious code, or take other mitigation actions in response to malicious code detection.

In Plain English

Anti-malware protection must be deployed at system entry and exit points, including endpoints, email gateways, and network boundaries. Protection must be kept current with the latest signatures and definitions. Scheduled and real-time scanning must be configured, and detected malware must be automatically blocked, quarantined, and reported.

On-premises implementation and evidence

Anti-malware deployment and management

Implementation steps

  1. Install anti-malware software on all endpoints, servers, and email gateways with real-time protection enabled
  2. Configure automatic updates for malware signatures, engines, and definitions; verify updates are applied daily
  3. Schedule full system scans at the defined frequency (e.g., weekly) in addition to real-time scanning of file downloads and executions
  4. Configure automated responses: block execution, quarantine detected files, and send alerts to security administrators
