A. Prohibit remote activation of collaborative computing devices and applications with the following exceptions: [Assignment: organization-defined exceptions where remote activation is to be allowed]. B. Provide an explicit indication of use to users physically present at the devices.

Devices with cameras, microphones, or screen-sharing capabilities must not be remotely activatable without the user's knowledge. If such devices are activated, there must be a clear visual or auditory indicator so people in the room know they are being recorded or observed. Exceptions must be explicitly defined and approved.

Collaborative device remote activation control

Implementation steps

  1. Configure conferencing equipment and collaboration devices to disable remote activation of cameras and microphones by default
  2. Document and approve any exceptions where remote activation is required, with compensating controls
  3. Verify that all devices with cameras and microphones have hardware or software indicators showing when they are active
  4. Use Group Policy or device management to prevent remote desktop tools from activating cameras or microphones without local user consent
