03.13.09Network disconnectITSP.10.171System and communications protection

Official Requirement

Terminate network connections associated with communications sessions at the end of the sessions or after [Assignment: organization-defined time period] of inactivity.

Source: Canadian Centre for Cyber Security ITSP.10.171 (2025), adapted from NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 3

In Plain English

Network sessions must be automatically terminated when they end or when they have been idle for a defined period. This prevents abandoned sessions from being hijacked and reduces the attack surface from lingering connections.
