Official Requirement

Implement cryptographic mechanisms to prevent the unauthorized disclosure of specified information during transmission and while in storage.

Source: Canadian Centre for Cyber Security ITSP.10.171 (2025), adapted from NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 3

In Plain English

All sensitive information must be encrypted both when it is being transmitted over networks and when it is stored at rest. This means using TLS/HTTPS for data in transit and AES-256 or equivalent encryption for data at rest, ensuring unauthorized parties cannot read the data even if they intercept or access the storage.

On-premises implementation and evidence

Encryption in transit and at rest

Implementation steps

  1. Deploy TLS 1.2 or higher on all web servers, application servers, and internal services; disable older TLS and SSL versions
  2. Implement full-disk encryption on all servers and workstations; encrypt databases and file shares containing specified information
  3. Use IPsec or TLS tunnels for inter-site and inter-system data transfers
  4. Audit encryption coverage periodically to ensure all specified information is encrypted in transit and at rest
