03.13.04Information in shared system resourcesITSP.10.171System and communications protection

Official Requirement

Prevent unauthorized and unintended information transfer via shared system resources.

Source: Canadian Centre for Cyber Security ITSP.10.171 (2025), adapted from NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 3

In Plain English

Your systems must prevent sensitive information from leaking through shared resources such as memory, disk caches, temporary files, or shared storage. When one process or user finishes with a shared resource, residual data must be cleared before another process or user accesses it.

On-premises implementation and evidence

Shared resource information leakage prevention

Implementation steps

  1. Configure operating systems to clear memory pages and temporary files before reallocating them to other processes
  2. Enable full-disk encryption including swap partitions and temporary file storage
  3. Implement process isolation and enforce separation between applications handling different sensitivity levels
  4. Periodically audit shared storage areas (temp directories, shared folders) for residual sensitive data
