Source: Canadian Centre for Cyber Security ITSP.10.171 (2025), adapted from NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 3

In Plain English

Your organization must control what types of media can be used on your systems. Certain media types (like USB drives) may be restricted or outright prohibited. Removable media with no identifiable owner must never be used -- this prevents attacks via dropped or unknown USB devices.

On-premises implementation and evidence

Media use restriction and ownership enforcement

Implementation steps

  1. Create a removable media policy defining permitted and prohibited media types, and conditions for use
  2. Use Group Policy or endpoint protection to disable USB mass storage and optical drives on workstations by default
  3. Establish a registration process for approved removable media devices, assigning each to a named owner
  4. Configure endpoint controls to allow only registered, owner-identified removable media devices
