03.08.03Media sanitizationITSP.10.171Media protection

Official Requirement

Sanitize system media containing specified information prior to disposal, release out of organizational control, or release for reuse.

Source: Canadian Centre for Cyber Security ITSP.10.171 (2025), adapted from NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 3

In Plain English

Before disposing of, giving away, or repurposing any media that has held sensitive information, you must sanitize it -- meaning securely wipe or destroy it so the data cannot be recovered. This applies to hard drives, SSDs, USB drives, tapes, and any other storage media.

On-premises implementation and evidence

Media sanitization prior to disposal or reuse

Implementation steps

  1. Document media sanitization procedures aligned with NIST SP 800-88 guidelines (clear, purge, destroy) for each media type
  2. Use approved sanitization tools for magnetic media (multi-pass overwrite) and degaussing; use physical destruction for SSDs and optical media
  3. Verify sanitization effectiveness through spot-check verification on a sample of sanitized media
  4. Maintain certificates of destruction for physically destroyed media and sanitization logs for wiped media
