Source: Canadian Centre for Cyber Security ITSP.10.171 (2025), adapted from NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 3

Remote maintenance sessions must be formally approved and monitored. All non-local maintenance connections must use multi-factor authentication with replay-resistant mechanisms. Sessions and network connections must be terminated as soon as maintenance work is complete -- no lingering open sessions.

On-premises implementation and evidence

Non-local maintenance session management

Implementation steps

  1. Require documented approval (ticket or change request) before any non-local maintenance session is initiated
  2. Configure VPN or remote access gateway to enforce MFA with replay-resistant authentication for all maintenance connections
  3. Monitor and record all remote maintenance sessions using a PAM solution or session recording tool
  4. Enforce automatic session termination upon task completion and configure idle timeout policies on VPN and remote access tools
