Security incidents must be tracked in a formal system from detection through resolution. Suspected incidents must be reported to the IR team within a defined timeframe. Incidents must also be reported to external authorities when required. Users must have a clear way to report incidents and get support.

Implementation steps

  1. Deploy an incident tracking system or use the existing ticketing system with a dedicated incident category
  2. Publish incident reporting procedures to all users including reporting timelines, channels, and what constitutes a reportable incident
  3. Designate an incident response point of contact available during business hours (and on-call for after-hours) to provide reporting assistance
  4. Maintain a list of external reporting obligations and contacts; include in the incident response plan
