Source: Canadian Centre for Cyber Security ITSP.10.171 (2025), adapted from NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 3

In Plain English

When users enter passwords or other authentication credentials, the system must not display them in clear text. Password fields must mask input with dots or asterisks, and error messages must not reveal whether the username or password was incorrect (to prevent account enumeration).

On-premises implementation and evidence

Obscured authentication feedback

Implementation steps

  1. Verify that all system login prompts (Windows logon, Linux terminal, application logins) mask password input
  2. Configure application error messages to use generic authentication failure messages
  3. Review application logs to ensure passwords and authentication tokens are not logged in clear text
  4. Include authentication feedback verification in periodic security assessments
