Official Requirement

Uniquely identify and authenticate [Assignment: organization-defined devices or types of devices] before establishing a system connection.

Source: Canadian Centre for Cyber Security ITSP.10.171 (2025), adapted from NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 3

In Plain English

Before a device can connect to your network or systems, it must be uniquely identified and authenticated. This ensures that only known, authorized devices can access your environment -- not just any laptop or phone that shows up on the network.

Device identification and authentication

Implementation steps

  1. Implement 802.1X network access control (NAC) to authenticate devices before granting network access
  2. Use machine certificates distributed via Active Directory Certificate Services for device authentication
  3. Deploy a NAC solution to profile and authorize devices, placing unauthorized devices in a quarantine VLAN
  4. Maintain an authorized device inventory and block MAC addresses not in the approved list (in addition to 802.1X)
