Official Requirement

A. Protect audit information and audit logging tools from unauthorized access, modification, and deletion B. Authorize access to management of audit logging functionality to only a subset of privileged users or roles

Source: Canadian Centre for Cyber Security ITSP.10.171 (2025), adapted from NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 3

In Plain English

Audit logs and the tools that generate them must be protected from tampering. If an attacker can delete or modify logs, they can cover their tracks. Restrict who can manage logging configuration and access raw log data to a small group of authorized privileged users.

On-premises implementation and evidence

Audit information protection and access restriction

Implementation steps

  1. Configure log forwarding to a centralized SIEM or log server where source system administrators cannot modify or delete forwarded logs
  2. Restrict SIEM and log server administrative access to a small group of authorized security personnel
  3. Implement write-once storage or append-only log destinations where feasible
  4. Enable access auditing on log storage to detect unauthorized access attempts to audit data
