All systems must use synchronized clocks to generate timestamps in audit records. Timestamps must be in UTC (or mappable to UTC) and precise enough to establish event ordering during investigations. Without synchronized and precise timestamps, correlating events across systems during an incident is impossible.

Synchronized time stamps in UTC

Implementation steps

  1. Configure all servers and network devices to synchronize with authoritative NTP servers (e.g., pool.ntp.org or internal NTP infrastructure)
  2. Set up a hierarchical NTP architecture with internal stratum-1 or stratum-2 servers for the domain
  3. Configure all systems to log timestamps in UTC with at least second-level granularity (millisecond preferred)
  4. Monitor NTP synchronization status and alert on drift exceeding defined thresholds
