In Plain English

Your systems must actually produce the audit records you have defined, and you must retain them long enough to support investigations and meet retention requirements. It is not enough to configure logging -- you must verify that logs are being generated and stored for the required period.

On-premises implementation and evidence

Audit record generation and retention

Implementation steps

  1. Verify log generation by checking that all configured event types produce records on representative systems
  2. Configure SIEM retention policies to retain logs online for the defined investigation period and archive to offline storage for long-term retention
  3. Implement automated log rotation and archival to prevent storage exhaustion while maintaining retention compliance
  4. Test log retrieval from archives periodically to ensure archived logs remain accessible and usable
