Official Requirement
A. Provide security and privacy literacy training to system users: 1. as part of initial training for new users and [Assignment: organization-defined frequency] thereafter 2. when required by system changes or following [Assignment: organization-defined events] 3. on recognizing and reporting indicators of insider threat, social engineering, and social mining B. Update security and privacy literacy training content [Assignment: organization-defined frequency] and following [Assignment: organization-defined events]

In Plain English
All users must receive security and privacy awareness training when they join and at regular intervals thereafter. Training must cover real-world threats including phishing, social engineering, insider threats, and social media risks. The content must be kept current with lessons learned from actual incidents and include practical exercises like phishing simulations.
These are typical controls and implementation steps. Your systems and environment may differ.
Typical Control Security and privacy literacy training program
Implementation Steps
Deploy a security awareness training platform with annual training modules covering phishing, social engineering, insider threats, password hygiene, and data handling
Assign initial training upon onboarding and annual refresher training; track completion rates and send automated reminders for overdue users
Run quarterly phishing simulations and use results to tailor follow-up training for users who fail simulations
Update training content at least annually and after significant security incidents or system changes, incorporating lessons learned
Tools / Systems
Security awareness platform (KnowBe4, Proofpoint Security Awareness, Ninjio)Phishing simulation tool (KnowBe4, Cofense)LMS or HR platform for training trackingGRC platform for compliance tracking
Typical Control Security and privacy literacy training program
Evidence Artifacts
Training completion reports showing all users completed initial and annual training with dates
Phishing simulation results and follow-up training records
Training content revision history showing updates after incidents or system changes
📅Annual training cycle; quarterly phishing simulations; annual content review
