In Plain English

Mobile devices (phones, tablets) that access organizational systems must be formally authorized, configured to security standards, and encrypted. This applies to both corporate-owned and BYOD devices. You need a mobile device policy, an MDM solution to enforce it, and encryption on every device that touches your data.

On-premises implementation and evidence

Mobile device access control and encryption

Implementation steps

  1. Publish a mobile device policy and maintain an inventory of authorized mobile devices with assigned users
  2. Deploy MDM software to enforce full-device encryption, passcode requirements, and remote wipe capability
  3. Restrict mobile device access to the corporate network to a dedicated wireless segment with limited access to sensitive resources
  4. Implement application-level encryption containers for email and corporate data on BYOD devices
